What's On Tap This Week (May 22nd - 26th) @3030DundasWest

Hope you had a great long weekend

It's bee a pretty eventful week in Toronto, from news about our intrepid Mayor gaining worldwide attention, to a long weekend chock full of great shows, we've finally had a bit of time to catch our breadth and get on to the next week, and we've got another great week for you.

But first, I wanted to draw your attention to a really cool little cafe located just outside of the Junction.  As you know, at 3030 we are big fans of vinyl, and also big fans of coffee, and when the two are combined that makes us big fans of Cabin Fever Collective.  They are located a few blocks from Dundas West Subway station on Bloor, so stop on in, get a cup of joe and chat music with the friendly folks who run the place.

Free coffee or tea with every record purchased.  Really.

So now that you've got your next destination for great music AND coffee, let's get to all the cool stuff that we're bringing to the Junction this week.

The Kitchen

Boar Burger!

Some pretty big news coming out of the Kitchen this week, as we've taken the jump, and have launched lunch service during the week, from 11am - 4pm.  Chef Adissa, has put his unique spin on an amazing lunch menu.  Take a look at it, and make plans to visit us in the afternoon.  The neighbourhood has spoken and we're open now!

The Bar

This weekend, our friends from the culturally distinct part of the country are helping us to give you two great shows on Friday and Saturday.  McAuslan St-Ambroise, who make one of my favourite stouts, are going to be bringing in some special, limited time only beers for our taps, while helping us to bring you both an awesome Burlesque show, as well as some great music from Montreal.

One of the first modern craft breweries, it was launched in 1989, and has been brewing some of the best beer in this country for almost half a century.  We hope that as you're enjoying the tunes this weekend, that you raise a glass of theirs, and hopefully you'll get to meet our friendly rep Holisha, who will be providing free samples of some of their brews.  How can you argue with that?

The Programming

We've got a really eclectic line-up this week, and hopefully there is something in here which will appeal to just about anyone.

On Wednesday, it's the return of our exceptionally popular @3030Trivia brought to you by Junction Craft Brewing.

Experimental dub band, Masters of Love and Sound release their album in the back part of the venue on Thursday.

An overdue return on Friday comes with a high-school themed burlesque presentation brought to you by McAuslan St-Ambroise.

Phenomenal soul-funk-ska band from Montreal, The Key Lites return to 3030 as part of the #MetropoleTO series brought to you by McAuslan St-Ambroise, on Saturday.

Finally, on Sunday we've got an event the whole family can enjoy, with our Wonderful World of Lazy programming, featuring screenings of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs at 5:30 and Despicable Me at 7:30.

Thanks for taking the time to give this a read, and in honour of our amazing neighbourhood, I hope that you enjoy this Betty Lavette b-side.

Friday, June 7th - Amsterdam Brewing & OH16 Soul Present...The Famly - $5

OH16 Soul Presents...

On the first friday of every month (usually), DJ OH16 hits the decks, spinning an all vinyl set of some of the best soul (both new and old) that is sure to get the dance floor up and bumpin.  Thanks to the good folks at Amsterdam Brewery, we're able to keep the cover low, and pints of Amsterdam very reasonably priced.  It's party music, but it's also smart music, where you can expect to hear some vintage Sam & DaveTemptationsAl GreenMarvin Gaye and James Brown, along with slightly more rare tracks from cats like King Floyd and Kool & Together.  You can also expect to hear some newer wax getting spun by folks like Sharon JonesMenahan St. Band and Black Joe Lewis.  Bring your dancing shoes, and expect a killer night of some of the best soul music you'll ever hear.  But wait...

The Famly

The Famly is a six-piece band from Toronto, Ontario, Canada who recently recorded their second album. The celebratory spirit of their music is rooted in their long-standing friendship. Elie Maalouf, Mark and Greg Calderone, Robert Riccio, Ernesto Barahona and Aubrey McGee combine the power of soul music with the grit and rhythm of the blues and funk to create an energized experience for any listener.

These young musicians have played at many of the staple venues of the Toronto music scene including The Ballroom Bowl, Grace O’ Malley’s, the El Mocambo, The Hideout, Sneaky Dee’s, and The Opera House, often filling the space to capacity.
The Famly, composes and produces all of their own original music in addition to covering songs by James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and many others during live shows. Their passion and enthusiasm for music will surely contribute to making many quality records in the years to come.

Lunch @3030DundasWest - 11pm - 4pm - Tuesday to Friday

That's not just any burger, it's a Boar Burger!

3030 Does Lunch

First we started with small plates, and people seemed to like it.  The Chef Adisa Glasgow introduced a full dinner menu, and the critics loved it.  So we decided to start serving brunch as well, and folks seemd to really like that to.  There was only one thing missing...

lunch.

Well not anymore!  So the next time you're in the Junction, and the usual lunch options just aren't cutting it for you, head on down to 3030 for something a bit off the beaten track.  While playing a game of pinball, and enjoying a nice pint of locally crafted beer, feast your eyes on the menu below and give yourself a treat some afternoon soon.

Friday, May 31st - Steam Whistle presents: Mexican Movie Poster w. Tupper Ware Remix Party, The Cucos & DJ Ricky Bionix - $5

Steamwhistle Presents - Mexican Movie Poster - What Is It?

It's ok, we don't know what it is either.  Often times, I'll find great bands, that I really believe that people should be listening to, but I just don't have a night that fits with what they are doing.  Mexican Movie poster, is a monthly concert series that brings some of these great bands together, with a unifying theme, the posters are all sourced from old Mexican Movie Posters of the 1930's to the 1960's, which feature some of the niftyess commercial art I've ever come across.  With Steamwhistle Brewing on board as our sponsor, I'm very excited to bring some great, fresh music to the Junction each month.  Perhaps you've never heard of these bands, but take my word for it, they are well worth giving a listen to, and you could do a lot worse things with five bucks.

The Cucos

The Cucos Band was born in 2009 when songwriter and singer-mc Ernesto Brooks (also known as 'Netto Man") and Producer-Songwriter-guitarist Tury Morey met in Toronto.  Working together to make music with a social conscience and urging people to reflect on the world around them.

The band's name "The Cucos" is derived from the roots of its founders, a combination of "Cubanos and Colombianos". Netto Man was born in Havana, Cuba and Tury Morey was born in Cartagena de Indias Colombia, 'The Cucos" music is full of new sounds mixing Reggae, Rock, Hip Hop, Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythms. We created 'The Cucos" with the object of sharing our songs with the world and bringing joy through our music.

Tupper Ware Remix Party

Like I said before, Mexican Movie Poster is the home of some of the most unique, and yes weird stuff I've come across.  I've seen these guys live, and they are freakin' awesome, and if you don't believe me, come on out, see the show and if you hate it tell me and I'll give you your five bucks back.  Here's the bio:

The five cosmic beings that comprise TWRP have been playing intergalactic-electro-dance-metal since crash landing on Earth in 2008 AD. In their time on this planet TWRP (also known in longhand as Tupper Ware Remix Party) has established a name for itself as an outrageous party band. Through inciting frenzied dance parties and uncontrollable bodily gyration with their sci-fi flavoured electronic rock, they seek to eliminate boredom and despair across the galaxy.

DJ Ricky Bionix

Keeping the dance floor moving before, in between and after the bands is the legendary Ricky Bionix.  Ricky has been an innovator in Southern Ontario's deejay scene for over a decade. Beginning his career in Guelph, he played host to numerous residencies in the city, plus a weekly radio program on University of Guelph's campus & community radio station, CFRU 93.3 FM.

Wednesday, May 22nd - 8pm - @3030Trivia brought to you by Junction Craft Brewing

Apparently, this is our 7th Greatest Canadian

Some Questions From Last Week:

What play on words of the title of a John Steinbeck novel was the name of the sequel to The Don Cherry Story?

Legend has it that what baked good, made with laminated yeast-leavened dough, is said to commemorate the historical defeat of the Ottomans by Christian forces?

What category was orange in the original 1980 version of Trivial Pursuit? It’s three words, the middle word is “and”, and this question, about Trivial Pursuit, could very well fit into this category.

****

Did you know?

The Genus edition of Trivial Pursuit includes incorrect facts - some of which are there on purpose to serve as copyright protection, and some that just slipped by without proper fact checking.  So, no - Otto Titzling did not invent the brassiere, and Thomas Crapper did not invent the toilet (although he did invent the ballcock, which is still pretty funny...)

If you like to fill your brain with silly bits of triviality like we do, you'll love the madcap antics of 3030trivia, sponsored by Junction Craft Brewing.  Each week our clever hosts dream up wacky and wonderful questions to keep you sharp and cure a dull week.  All you need to do is bring a team of four, and let the fun begin.  Trivia starts at 8, but hey - why not come early to secure a table, order a pint and get some food in ya?

Last week was officially the hardest edition of 3030trivia - good work to all the teams who slogged through all 60 questions with great spirits, if not-so-great answers.  Congratulations to long time trivializers, first time winners, Bender and the Bent!  This season is a short one, so with only three weeks to go the pressure is on. Also, our Elite Eight competition begins this week just to spice things up - good luck to our top eight teams - you know who you are.  Or if you don't, just take a look at the bracket below:

(And also take a look at these answers to the questions above:  THE WRATH OF GRAPES, CROISSANTS, SPORTS AND LEISURE)

Friday, May 18th - Amanda Davids & The Quantum Loop w. DJ Justin Rutledge

Amanda Davids & The Quantum Loop

Thanks to the good folks at Stonehammer Breweries, 3030 is proud to present the #StoneHammerSessions each month.

How often do you get to hear a gal with a three and a half octave voice who also plays the hammond, and an eight string guitarist on the same stage?  Probably not that often, unless you're hip to Amanda Davids & The Quantum Loop.  So come down to 3030, and get hip.

DJ Justin Rutledge

Longtime Junctionite, and brilliant songwriter Justin Rutledge will be bringing in a grate or two of awesome vinyl from his record collection.  Also, you should go out to your favourite local music store and buy his album.  It's quite good.
